4. Selling Birthday Cakes

I have earned money by selling birthday cakes.

Not just any cakes, but only birthday cakes.

This was a good enough unique selling proposition to begin with. Can you think of a unique type of cakes to sell? You’ll immediately stand out. And then you use the exceptionally underrated power of the pamphlet to get the word out, and build from there. That’s what I used. These days, I would spend some money on Facebook ads and target my local area.

I have had two unique experiences within selling cakes. One was AClassAct, and the other was Cakes.pk.

  1. Selling cakes, getting someone else to make them via AClassAct.
  2. Baking our own cakes, and then selling them via Cakes.pk.

Although I have used online, social media and the like to generate sales, the majority of sales come through good ol’ offline networking, follow ups and delivering unique products!

Never underestimate the power of the simple follow-up!

There are hundreds if not thousands of people in Lahore, who spend upwards of 1 lac rupees on celebrating the birthday of their child. Anywhere between 10,000 to 40,000 rupees can be spent on a customized, fondant cake alone! That opportunity still exists, but a lot of players have now entered the market.

I remember I had a student who joined my ProHobbyist 5 Week Challenge course. In the sign up form, she simply mentioned she sells cakes from her home. Which is pretty common, so I thought “great, I have exact case studies for her!”

When I got around to having our one-on-one chat (part of the ProHobbyist course), I discovered she would bring in a total of 7 bakers and hired help in her home kitchen every weekend, and she was making, back in that time, close to 9 lacs in revenue every month. From baking and selling cakes.

If someone can earn close to a million rupees every month from just selling cakes, what can you do with a little focus and the right frameworks to market your product?
